In order to meet the future spatial requirements of physical education and club sport, the lawn on the Bleichematt and Mühlematt school grounds was chosen as the location of a new triple gymnasium. With large building openings directly oriented towards the schoolyards, the gymnasium is visually integrated into the grounds as a whole and rounds them off.
Athletes and spectators coming from the roofed forecourt area enter the foyer, where it is possible to see into the gymnasium. A flight of steps provides access to the spectators' gallery, from which the changing rooms and ancillary rooms can also be reached. A second flight of steps on the opposite side leads into the gymnasium on the entrance level.
The elongated, rather low structure is enveloped by three overlapping and slightly offset strips that offer an external depiction of the utilised internal levels and the support structure. These strips are made from vertical wooden profiles with dimensions that vary, causing unexpected shadows to fall on them according to the sun's position and thus lending the building a certain haptic nature.
The triple gymnasium is spanned by visible fixed steel beams that are 30.5 m long, each weighing 4 tonnes.
